Readers! A November fund-raising drive!

 

It is unfortunately time for another November fund-raising campaign to support my work here at Behind the Black. I really dislike doing these, but 2025 is so far turning out to be a very poor year for donations and subscriptions, the worst since 2020. I very much need your support for this webpage to survive.

 

And I think I provide real value. Fifteen years ago I said SLS was garbage and should be cancelled. Almost a decade ago I said Orion was a lie and a bad idea. As early as 1998, long before almost anyone else, I predicted in my first book, Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8, that private enterprise and freedom would conquer the solar system, not government. Very early in the COVID panic and continuing throughout I noted that every policy put forth by the government (masks, social distancing, lockdowns, jab mandates) was wrong, misguided, and did more harm than good. In planetary science, while everyone else in the media still thinks Mars has no water, I have been reporting the real results from the orbiters now for more than five years, that Mars is in fact a planet largely covered with ice.

This last claim might sound like hubris on my part, but I base it on my overall track record.

Republican California state legislator introduces bill to overturn California Coastal Commission’s effort to block SpaceX

Republican state assemblyman Bill Essayli has now introduced a bill that would overturn the decision by the California Coastal Commission to reject SpaceX’s request to increase its launch rate at Vandenberg spaceport, a decision the commissioners readily and publicly stated was made not to protect the state’s beaches (the commission’s prime function) but because they did not like Musk’s political positions.

“AB 10 will reverse the politically-motivated decision by the California Coastal Commission to restrict SpaceX launches for the Space Force due to their hatred of Elon Musk. This dangerous and illegal decision threatens our national security and erodes the public trust we place in our officials to act in the best interest of the people — not politics,” Essayli said in a statement this week.

SpaceX has already sued the commission and its commissioners for violating Musk’s first amendment rights as well as exceeding their statutory authority.

The bottom line however is that the commission’s decision carries no legal weight. Vandenberg is an federally operated military base, and thus this state commission has no authority to dictate what happens there. The Space Force has simply tried to work with it in the past.

Thus, if the commission’s fangs are not pulled by Essayli’s legislation as well as SpaceX’s lawsuit, the military will likely just ignore it.

    *Musk, according to this post, is now seen by such people as a “billionaire supervillain” (Lex Luthor?) who is guilty of “amplifying horrible people and silencing others.” Plus, he has those horrible, planet-killing rockets. Sigh.

    However, if the commission is allowed to get away with this clearly illegal and immoral travesty of a ruling, then no Californian’s freedoms are safe from the state government. Assemblyman Bill Essayli is correct that this further destroys the trust We the People have that our government rules in a fair and impartial manner. Worse, that our government rules over us, not serves us.

    Government has three purposes:
    1. Defend its citizens from all enemies, foreign and domestic
    2. Provide an indifferent third party to peaceably resolve disputes
    3. Stay out of the citizens’ way

    The Preamble to the Constitution outlines exactly how the Founding Fathers expected the U.S. government to achieve these three purposes:

    We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

    Here is how these concepts fit into the three purposes:

    We the People of the United States, in Order to …
    1. insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence,
    2. establish Justice,
    3. form a more perfect Union, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,
    … do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America

    The state known for “Poop Maps” allows a “commission” of loud mouth butt-hurt morons to try to stop national security/military missions that are helping millions (including those that have fled for more rational states). MDS is as real as TDS and just as destructive to left wing “sanity”. And will likely only continue to de-populate the state while getting slapped down very publicly on (if not before) January 20, 2025.

    Wait until they find out about Starship launches…
